De Onbeperkte Elfstedentocht
213 km, 11 cities, 5 days, 1 bike and me…! From 15th until 19th September I will be attempting to complete the "Onbeperkte Elfstedentocht” on my “Harley”bike. This is an event where anyone with a limitation/disability will be a winner!
The “Elfstedentocht” (Eleven cities trip) is a famous ice skating tour on natural ice, when it freezes of course....
Sandy Krijnen is the creator of this event. She was diagnosed with MS in 2009 and could barely walk 100 meter unaided, since 2012 she has been wheelchair bound. When her husband entered the “Elfstedentocht’ by bike, which was a 1 day event, she was on the side lines encouraging him. All the time wishing she could have joined him but not able to inspired her to created the Onbeperkte (Unlimiting) Elfstedentocht. Any one with a chronic illness, disability or having any other limitations can participate in this event and be a winner. Through her foundation Sandy Moves she successfully turned her idea into reality with the first edition of the Onbeperkte Elfstedentocht taking place last year.
When I read about this event I immediately got inspired to register and challenge myself.
After suffering a stroke 6 years ago I have been busy recovering, training and reinventing some of the most everyday things our brain does for us every single day. The word limitation was a trigger to push myself but as time has passed and, with a healthy amount of, adaptation & adjustment and an even bigger dose of inspiration, it has also taught me to accept my new situation.
I would like to be an inspiration to others to show that any limitation does not mean an end to your path in life. It is just an interruption/pothole in your current path but from which other paths can and will lead.
One of my goals is to collect money for a specific research to decrease tiredness, Neuro fatigue, after suffering a brain injury though the Hersenstichting.
From all donations received 25% will go to the Sandy Moves foundation and 75% to the Hersenstichting for “Minder moeiheid na hersenletsel” (Decreasing Neurofatigue after brain injury)
